Marvell reported record fiscal second-quarter revenue and raised its revenue outlook for both fiscal 2027 and fiscal 2028, citing stronger-than-expected demand across AI data center connectivity, switching and custom silicon. The main change in the investment story is not the modest earnings beat: management now expects fiscal 2028 revenue of roughly $18B, up from its prior $16.5B outlook, with data center growth expected to exceed 60%.
The higher outlook reflects broad AI infrastructure demand, but it also increases the importance of execution. Custom silicon is ramping at lower gross margins than Marvell’s broader portfolio, while the company is committing about $1B in supplier capacity prepayments this fiscal year to secure supply.

The Bigger Story
Marvell’s quarter reinforced that its AI exposure is extending beyond optical DSPs and other scale-out networking products. Management raised fiscal 2027 revenue expectations by roughly $500M to approximately $12B and lifted its fiscal 2028 forecast by $1.5B to roughly $18B.
The company attributed the change primarily to data center demand. Marvell now expects its data center business to grow about 60% in fiscal 2027, compared with its prior expectation of approximately 50%, and to grow more than 60% again in fiscal 2028.
That outlook depends on multiple product categories rather than one program. Management pointed to optical interconnect, broadband analog components, switching, custom XPUs and XPU-attached products such as CXL-related memory expansion, custom network interface controllers and storage controllers.
The most consequential longer-term development was an expanded commercial agreement and warrant arrangement with a large hyperscale customer that management said is a major adopter of custom silicon and part of the TPU ecosystem. Marvell said revenue through fiscal 2028 from programs covered by the agreement is already included in its previously stated custom revenue outlook. The agreement appears more important for fiscal 2029 and beyond, when management said it expects a materially larger custom-silicon opportunity, although it did not provide an updated fiscal 2029 custom revenue target.
Revenue and Operating Performance
Revenue rose 37% year over year to $2.739B, with data center revenue of $2.17B accounting for 79% of total sales. Data center growth accelerated from the fiscal first quarter, when the segment had grown 11% sequentially and 27% year over year.
Management identified three primary near-term connectivity drivers:
- Optical DSPs: Demand for 800G products remained strong, while 1.6T products are ramping and are expected to contribute more meaningfully in fiscal 2028.
- Scale-out switching: Marvell expects its scale-out switching business to more than double this year, supported by 51.2T product ramps across a broader customer base.
- Broadband analog: Demand for transimpedance amplifiers and drivers exceeded management’s prior expectations.
Management also said its scale-across data center interconnect opportunity is increasing as hyperscalers build larger AI clusters spanning multiple facilities. It highlighted coherent DSP-enabled 1.6T ZR and ZR+ modules as products positioned for that architecture. This remains a growth opportunity rather than a reported revenue driver at the scale of optical DSPs and scale-out switching.
Communications and other end markets contributed $568M of revenue, down 3% sequentially but up 10% year over year. Management expects that business to decline by a low- to mid-teens percentage rate in fiscal Q3, both sequentially and year over year, before recovering sequentially in fiscal Q4. That outlook illustrates the increasing divergence between Marvell’s AI data center business and its more traditional markets.
Profitability and Margins
Marvell generated GAAP gross margin of 53.1% and non-GAAP gross margin of 58.9%. Non-GAAP operating margin reached 36.6%, expanding 160 basis points sequentially and 180 basis points from a year earlier as revenue growth outpaced operating expenses.
GAAP operating expenses were $996M, including stock-based compensation, acquired-intangible amortization, restructuring and acquisition-related costs. Non-GAAP operating expenses were $611M.
GAAP diluted EPS was $0.33, while non-GAAP EPS was $0.94, up 40% year over year and one cent above the midpoint of management’s guidance.
Margins are becoming more relevant as the revenue mix shifts toward custom silicon. For fiscal Q3, management guided non-GAAP gross margin to 57.5% to 58.5%, below the fiscal Q2 result. CFO Dan Durn attributed the expected sequential pressure primarily to a stronger custom-silicon ramp, which carries a different margin profile from some of Marvell’s merchant connectivity products.
Management expects gross margin to remain in a similar range in fiscal Q4 and, preliminarily, through fiscal 2028. The company’s margin expansion thesis is therefore increasingly centered on operating leverage rather than gross-margin improvement. Marvell expects non-GAAP operating margin to enter its long-term 38% to 40% target range in fiscal Q4 and reach the upper end of that range as fiscal 2028 progresses.
Demand, Customers and Pricing
Management’s demand commentary was uniformly strong in AI infrastructure, though it did not provide bookings, backlog or pricing data.
The expanded hyperscaler commercial agreement is strategically important because it covers more than a single accelerator program. Management described the scope as including AI inference accelerators, storage controllers, network interface controllers, memory interface controllers and near-memory compute products. The company said the arrangement validates its XPU-attach category, where Marvell supplies specialized chips that improve the performance or efficiency of larger AI systems.
However, investors should separate the commercial framework from realized revenue. Management said programs covered by the agreement through fiscal 2028 were already included in prior custom revenue targets. The incremental significance appears concentrated in fiscal 2029 and beyond, subject to product execution, customer deployment schedules and the ultimate scale of individual programs.
Marvell also described rising design activity for scale-up optical networking, including both co-packaged optics, or CPO, and near-packaged optics, or NPO. Management said customers are evaluating several optical architectures and modulation technologies as AI clusters outgrow the distance and bandwidth capabilities of copper interconnects.
This is an attractive potential market, but management also acknowledged that the transition from copper to optics in scale-up networks will take several years. Current customer discussions and design activity should not be treated as current revenue.
What is Marvell Technology’s guidance and outlook?
For fiscal Q3 2027, Marvell guided for:
| Metric | Management Guidance |
|---|---|
| Revenue | $3.15B, plus or minus 5% |
| Revenue growth at midpoint | Up 15% sequentially; more than 50% year over year |
| GAAP gross margin | 52.9% to 53.9% |
| Non-GAAP gross margin | 57.5% to 58.5% |
| GAAP diluted EPS | $0.48 to $0.58 |
| Non-GAAP diluted EPS | $1.05 to $1.15 |
| GAAP operating expenses | Approximately $1.015B |
| Non-GAAP operating expenses | Approximately $655M |
Management expects revenue growth to accelerate further in fiscal Q4. It now forecasts approximately $12B of fiscal 2027 revenue, representing about 45% year-over-year growth, followed by roughly $18B in fiscal 2028 revenue, or approximately 50% growth.
The fiscal 2028 outlook represents a substantial increase from the company’s prior $16.5B projection. Management said connectivity, including scale-out optics, scale-up optics and switching, is the largest contributor to the $1.5B increase. Custom silicon is also expected to contribute, with the custom business projected to more than double in fiscal 2028.
Marvell plans to provide additional long-term detail at its October 6 Investor Day. That event will be important because management has indicated that fiscal 2029 custom revenue could exceed its earlier $10B-plus framework, but has not yet quantified the revised opportunity.
Balance Sheet, Cash Flow and Capital
Cash flow from operations was $606M, down slightly sequentially because Marvell increased capacity prepayments to suppliers. The company expects to make approximately $1B in supplier capacity prepayments during fiscal 2027, funded through its balance sheet and operating cash flow.
These prepayments are intended to secure supply for customer programs and will be applied against future material purchases. They are not conventional capital expenditures, but they do shift cash deployment forward and raise the importance of demand conversion and supply-chain execution.
Marvell ended the quarter with $4.96B of total debt, a gross debt-to-EBITDA ratio of 1.32x and net debt-to-EBITDA of 0.27x. The leverage metrics suggest the company has financial flexibility to support its supply commitments, although interest expense remains material: management expects approximately $86M of GAAP other expense and approximately $36M of non-GAAP other expense in fiscal Q3.
The company repurchased $200M of stock and paid $54M in dividends during the quarter. Management said it intends to continue repurchases to manage dilution while also investing for growth.
What Investors Should Watch
1. Data Center Growth Through Fiscal Q4
Marvell’s fiscal 2028 outlook assumes continued acceleration after data center revenue grew 46% year over year in fiscal Q2 and was guided to grow roughly 75% year over year in fiscal Q3. Investors should watch whether fiscal Q4 delivers the further acceleration management has indicated.
2. Custom Silicon Ramp and Gross Margin Mix
Custom silicon is expected to accelerate in the second half and more than double in fiscal 2028. Its ramp is also the primary reason management expects lower gross margin in fiscal Q3, making revenue conversion and margin stability equally important.
3. Scale-Up Optics Execution
Marvell said its fiscal 2028 outlook for scale-up optics has risen meaningfully, driven by both CPO and NPO opportunities. The key evidence to monitor is whether customer engagements become disclosed design wins and production ramps rather than remaining architectural evaluations.
4. Fiscal 2029 Visibility From the Hyperscaler Agreement
The newly disclosed commercial agreement and warrant strengthen Marvell’s long-term custom opportunity, but management has said the larger contribution is likely after fiscal 2028. The October Investor Day should clarify the range of potential custom revenue outcomes and the timing of major programs.
5. Capacity Prepayments and Cash Conversion
The planned $1B in supplier prepayments reflects confidence in demand but increases working-capital needs. Investors should monitor operating cash flow, inventory and the pace at which prepayments convert into product shipments and revenue.
AlgovestIQ Takeaway
Marvell’s fiscal Q2 results were strong, but the more important development was the scale of the outlook increase. Management has moved from expecting roughly $11.5B of revenue in fiscal 2027 and $16.5B in fiscal 2028 to approximately $12B and $18B, respectively. That revision indicates that AI infrastructure demand is broadening across Marvell’s connectivity and custom portfolios.
The company’s data center business is no longer defined solely by optical DSP demand. Switching, broadband analog, CXL-related memory expansion and custom XPU-attached silicon are becoming more meaningful components of the growth narrative. That diversification could improve the durability of the AI opportunity if Marvell executes across several architectures and customers.
Still, the company is entering a more demanding phase of execution. The custom business is growing faster but appears to pressure gross margin relative to the existing product mix. Marvell’s ability to deliver operating-margin expansion while holding gross margins in its current range will be a central test of the financial model.
The hyperscaler agreement and warrant provide strategic validation, but the economic impact beyond fiscal 2028 remains unquantified. Management has said that programs through fiscal 2028 are already incorporated in its outlook, so investors should avoid treating the full potential of the agreement as near-term incremental revenue.
The central investment question is whether Marvell can turn rising AI design activity into sustained, diversified production revenue while maintaining supply availability and operating discipline. Evidence that scale-up optical products, switching platforms and custom programs are entering volume production would strengthen the thesis. Slower conversion, greater-than-expected margin pressure or increased cash absorption from capacity commitments would weaken it.
